Research theme

Both human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are pathogenic human retroviruses. HTLV-1 promotes clonal proliferation of CD4+ T cells, which leads to adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), while HIV destroys CD4+ T cells resulting in onset of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Our research objectives are to understand the molecular mechanisms of virus-induced diseases, and to develop novel therapeutic strategies through research of these human retroviruses.
