RESEARCH
The research projects carried out by this group are concerned with post-translational events in the expression of genetic information. Specifically, the processes of protein translation, protein translocation across and integration into the membrane, membrane protein proteolysis/assembly, and the stress responses that are induced when these cellular processes are compromised, are investigated by combined molecular genetic, biochemical biophysical and structural approaches. We are attempting to understand the mechanism of proteostasis in the cell surfaces of bacteria such as E. coli and Vibrio species.
Studies carried out in the Laboratory of Biological Membrane System.
Structure and function of the Protein translocation machinery: Elucidation of the structure and function of the Sec protein complex (translocon) and the translation arrest-mediated regulation of the expression of the translocon components. Regulation of extracytoplasmic stress responses and mechanism of membrane protein degradation: Elucidation of the structure and functions of intramembrane proteases and the mechanism of inner and outer membrane quality control.
